Historically, K A T E S has mostly made performances based on existing composed music from the 21st century - pieces like Ryan Brown's Four Pieces for Solo Piano and Missy Mazzoli's Isabelle Eberhardt Dreams of Pianos. Starting this Fall, we're going out on a limb for Project Magpie, a process of gathering, collecting, and refashioning little bits of things we like to make an original evening of performance. The material comes to us from our adventurous friends who make music, dances, and other artwork, and from you, too! More information about the project and how to contribute can be found right over here.

K A T E S at Omaha Under the Radar 2016 /
Kate and I (K A T E S) played the opening night concert of this year's Omaha Under the Radar festival at Project Project! Instead of our usual piano+dance, we shared our newest piece, "Two Voices" by me and Leila Adu. It looked like this /\ !
Two Voices / San Franciscoed <3 /
We did our K A T E S thing last night at Switchboard Presents out in San Francisco. In the set we did some piano banging, some talky-talking, and some dancy-musicky styling. It looked kind of like this -->
I should also say that on this concert we gave the official world premiere performance of Two Voices, which is a semi-dramatic near-dialog concerning two women trying to talk about their shared past and future. The text is by me and music for prepared digital piano is by my composer collaborator Leila Adu. I started this piece in a bald effort to copy the wonders that I've seen from writer/composer/performer Paul Pinto over the last year; happily, Two Voices turned into something of its own along the way. It's a piece I'm really proud of, and I hope I get to share it with you soon.
Kate and I (K A T E S) Played Firehouse Space <3 /
It was last night. We played Digit #2; performed the work-in-progress I wrote with Leila Adu, called 2 Voices; and played/danced our old friends Medieval Induction, Isabelle Eberhardt Dreams of Pianos, and Stage Whisper (for Kate). Andie Springer and James Moore played a set, too, and they even let us help out. It was fantastic. Go team!
K A T E S at Omaha Under the Radar 2016 /
Last July, while in Nebraska under the pretext of performing with K A T E S at the Omaha Under the Radar festival, I met this fantastically beautiful West African Crowned Crane at the Omaha Zoo. I think we can all agree that this bird is an inspiration.
In July 2016 I'll return under the same pretext of performing at Omaha Under the Radar (this time with a new piece for K A T E S, written by yours truly in collaboration with composer Leila Adu). This is great news for me and my bird watching.
